YouReporter is a citizen journalism website that has become a popular destination for people interested in sharing breaking news videos or pictures. Content uploaded on YouReporter.com is often re-used by big media outlets, especially during crisis events as well as for the daily coverage of local news.
Angelo Cimarosti, founder of YouReporter, explains: “We launched YouReporter in 2008, as a purely amateur initiative. I am a broadcast journalist and I have always felt frustrated by the vast amount of videos and pictures available online (it is often impossible for reporters to find them). So, together with Stefano De Nicolo (a broadcast journalist), Luca Bauccio (a lawyer) and Alessandro Coscia (a programmer/designer) we decided to launch a citizen journalism website mainly focused on visual contributions. And this was the right insight at the right time. Around 2009 in Italy we have assisted to an explosion of mobile devices with video-recording capabilities and so our website has become a popular destination for many “citizen journalists” interested in reaching a wider audience. After a 2-year start-up period (with no business plan at all), in 2010 we decided to invest more time and money in YouReporter. That was also because managing a video-centered website means that you spend a lot of money in bandwidth, hosting etc. Presently our business model is focused on free content (accessible and re-usable by whoever is interested) subsidized by advertising. Thanks to the huge amount of monthly unique visitors (1.5 million in December 2011) we are sure that advertising alone can be enough for our sustainability.”
A Power Magazine is a free magazine providing information of daily life especially in support of foreigners who either have interest in Japan or on a visit in Japan as, for example, international students. Their contents include information on job-hunting, house renting, and visa application, as well as Japanese culture. Those contents are so close to daily life that they have attracted the attention of foreigners who are interested in Japan, and thus expanding its influence among them.

RocketNews24 is a popular website that enjoys a high rate of sharing among Japanese social networking site users. Contents tend to lean towards entertainment, but by also including hard news and other related issues, we arouse journalistic debate in a paradoxical manner.

‘RocketNews24 is a news website dealing with strange, interesting news and happenings on the Internet, etc., both in Japan and abroad. In particular, we publish news that people are likely to share on social networking sites.’
‘Our news sources not only include online materials, but also features on-the-ground research, primarily in Japan and other Asian countries. We place emphasis on giving the reader that unique feeling of actually being on the spot. In this kind of reporting, our journalists are more likely to appear in front of the camera.’
With the globalization of Japanese society, there is growing interest towards news of its neighboring countries such as China.
‘Record China’ is an online media, which provides digital contents 24 hours a day, covering news, photo, and video related to China and other Asian countries. It has been publishing news and photos in collaboration with major portal websites such as ‘Yahoo!Japan’ and ‘livedoor’, and other institutions like Nikkei Telecom and Dow Jones. With their help, Record China is able to provide contents enjoying high news ranking overseas. Moreover, in addition to the fact that it renders photo data to NHK and TBS, ‘Record China’ also deals with interviewing, shooting and editing on request of TV stations.
Main audiences include media dealing with China’s news and businessmen who see China as their marketplace. Diversified information about China are displayed in category such as current affairs, economy, society, culture and sports.

“Demotix is an online platform that allows anyone anywhere to upload their news, video and images. We vet that material and then license it on to mainstream media. Essentially we are a ‘citizen journalism AP’ (= newswire). We split the revenue from sales 50/50 with our contributors.
On the other hand, we are increasingly becoming also a news publisher. Our secondary business model, as of very recently, is advertising revenue on Demotix.com as a news site. In January this year we were getting about 1,3 million page views a month, which is what prompted us to bring on advertising revenue. We share that with our contributors, so that they get 80% and Demotix gets 20%.
“Media Street Apps is a start-up business developing a web application called Media Street, which is a software application to run local websites. Our case study pilot site is for my local area, King’s Road, in Chelsea, London (kingsroad.co.uk). Our second local website is fulhamroad.co.uk.
Any domain name can be plugged into the Media Street app. That means a local news website can be created very quickly. I can expand into other areas of London without having to reinvent the wheel. We can also license the app to others, but that’s not in my six-month business plan. I’m trying to nail and finish my two pilot sites first.
Varese News is an online-only local newspaper, often described as one of the best practice in Italian new media landscape. Founded in 1997 and having survived the Dot-com bubble, it gradually became the most read publication in the Varese area, surpassing even the well-established local daily La Prealpina. Having focused from the very beginning on technological innovation and community building, today their website has 80,000 unique visitors per day and it is financial sustainable. In 2000 the overall company structure was modified to include main trade associations, unions, some enterprises and other local institutions.
“Rue89 was launched in 2007 by five professional journalists, some of them previously involved with the leftist newspaper Liberation. From the very beginning, the website stood out for its unique approach to digital journalism, clearly stated in its initial slogan: “Information with three voices: journalists, experts and you!” The term “”Rue”” (street) symbolizes the opening of a new way, while the number 89 recalls three symbolic events in history: the French Revolution (1789), the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), and the invention of the Web (1989).
AgoraVox was one of the first European citizen journalism sites. Created in 2005 from an idea by Carlo Revelli and Joël de Rosnay resembling the successful South-Korean OhMyNews website, AgoraVox relies almost exclusively on users generated content. The main aim of AgoraVox is to promote the freedom of expression and information, especially on issues not so much covered by mainstream media.
