Our business model is that of the news-agency: producing multimedia stories (text, video, pictures, interactive features) to re-sell to mainstream outlets. Currently we work with more than 30 European and South-American media outlets (print, radio, broadcasting and online). Recently we have started to offer supplementary services, too, as, for example, press roundups on China-related issues for Italian and Spanish corporations, press office consultancy for institutions (e.g. European Union, Embassies) and companies investing in China. These services are more remunerative than producing editorial content, but our main focus remains the journalistic activity.”
YouReporter is a citizen journalism website that has become a popular destination for people interested in sharing breaking news videos or pictures. Content uploaded on YouReporter.com is often re-used by big media outlets, especially during crisis events as well as for the daily coverage of local news.
Angelo Cimarosti, founder of YouReporter, explains: “We launched YouReporter in 2008, as a purely amateur initiative. I am a broadcast journalist and I have always felt frustrated by the vast amount of videos and pictures available online (it is often impossible for reporters to find them). So, together with Stefano De Nicolo (a broadcast journalist), Luca Bauccio (a lawyer) and Alessandro Coscia (a programmer/designer) we decided to launch a citizen journalism website mainly focused on visual contributions. And this was the right insight at the right time. Around 2009 in Italy we have assisted to an explosion of mobile devices with video-recording capabilities and so our website has become a popular destination for many “citizen journalists” interested in reaching a wider audience. After a 2-year start-up period (with no business plan at all), in 2010 we decided to invest more time and money in YouReporter. That was also because managing a video-centered website means that you spend a lot of money in bandwidth, hosting etc. Presently our business model is focused on free content (accessible and re-usable by whoever is interested) subsidized by advertising. Thanks to the huge amount of monthly unique visitors (1.5 million in December 2011) we are sure that advertising alone can be enough for our sustainability.”
Asymco is a technology oriented blog and business, owned by a former Nokia analyst Horace Dediu, who is based in Helsinki, Finland. The blog has a large international audience and it has been cited by business and technology publications such as Fortune, Forbes and Wired, for example. Mr. Dediu is very well-respected especially as an Apple analyst.
Mr. Dediu says the contents of his blog is analysis, not journalism. It’s not meant to be news or commentary. It’s meant to be taking those news and data, public information, and trying to interpret them. Initially, he planned to do app development, and the blog was intended as a way to promote that business. However, soon he found out that the type of work that was requested from the blog turned out to be more management consulting. He obtained some consulting engagements within three months from starting the blog and that is still the primary source of income for him.

It was among the first company to provide original web-generated format (social media news gathering, live coverage, data journalism projects) and to invest in visual journalism (motion graphic videos, interactive infographics, timeline features). The main activity focus on reportages and online services on innovation, internet and media, supporting NGOs and big enterprises with research and consulting services, as well as web platform developer training. ”
Elisabetta Tola, founder of Formica Blu, explains:
“Formica Blu focuses on journalism and science communication, using a cross-media approach that embraces paper, TV, radio and web. Beside our webzine and a web radio, we work as subcontractors for several news outlets (magazines, national and local radios, TV); we assist science editors, research groups and public organizations with information dissemination, communication plans, post-graduate training and audio-video productions. Although journalism (with that I mean our radio show “Radio3 Scienze” and our support to Wired, L’Espresso, Le Scienze, Mente&Cervello) guarantees us high visibility, the most of our profit comes from communication products. We also have independent science communication projects for which we seek bottom-up financing.”
“Rue89 was launched in 2007 by five professional journalists, some of them previously involved with the leftist newspaper Liberation. From the very beginning, the website stood out for its unique approach to digital journalism, clearly stated in its initial slogan: “Information with three voices: journalists, experts and you!” The term “”Rue”” (street) symbolizes the opening of a new way, while the number 89 recalls three symbolic events in history: the French Revolution (1789), the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), and the invention of the Web (1989).
Videonews.com is Japan’s first internet news television specializing in news, and was set up by Japan’s pioneering video journalist, Tetsuo Jimbo. Mr. Jimbo saw the need for a truly independent news television station that did not rely on advertising revenue.
The main program available on Video News is “Maru-geki Talk On Demand” and “News Commentary”, both anchored by Mr. Jimbo and sociologist Shinji Miyadai. Past guests have included such big names as Japan’s prime minister and cabinet members. Staff meetings are held to decide on what topics to investigate, but the lineup can be changed in the event a major news story comes up. In March 2011, a camera team was sent in to report on the devastation of the Japan Earthquake for a special report.
Hellapoliisi Ltd. is a privately owned company, located in Helsinki, Finland. Hellapoliisi.fi is a website which concentrates on food – it publishes recipes and articles of novelty items. Company offers recipes and food photography to order. The owner, Kati Jaakonen, does also recipe books and food related games that are published by Readme.fi Oy and Nelostuote Oy Tactic Games.
The Hellapoliisi (can be translated as Stove police) blogsite started as a hobby. Kati Jaakonen, a cook by profession, founded a food blog around 2006 – 2007 in order to offer photos of her pastry and recipes for people interested in food and cooking. The site became popular very rapidly by offering good recipes for free. The content of the site is still free for visitors. The revenue comes from recipes and food photos that Kati sells to food companies. She also publishes books containing recipes.
